Derek Bluford
Derek Bluford was born and raised in Northern California, where his early life was shaped by responsibility, ambition, and a strong desire to build something meaningful. Prior to his incarceration, Derek established himself as an entrepreneur and innovator in the legal technology space. At a young age, he founded Quicklegal, a legal tech startup designed to expand access to legal services through technology and automation. As founder, he led product development, operations, and growth, building the company from the ground up.
Under Derek’s leadership, Quicklegal gained significant recognition. He served as a panelist at Stanford Law School, won California TechWeek, and took first place in the NBA Kings Capitalize Competition, achievements that reflected both the strength of the platform and his ability to execute at a high level. His work also earned an opportunity to appear on Shark Tank, placing him among a select group of founders recognized for innovation, scalability, and market relevance. These accomplishments highlighted Derek’s capacity to identify problems, build solutions, and lead with urgency and creativity.

In 2018, Derek was indicted on federal charges stemming from conduct several years earlier. He has consistently taken full responsibility for those actions and the harm they caused, acknowledging the trust he violated and the consequences that followed. While incarceration was a profound reckoning, it also became a turning point—one that forced accountability, reflection, and a reorientation of purpose.
During his incarceration, Derek committed himself to personal transformation, education, faith, and service to others. It was during this period that he met Robert “Bob” Jesenik. United by shared values and a commitment to redemption through action, they began laying the foundation for A Better Tomorrow, an organization dedicated to supporting justice-impacted individuals and veterans as they prepare to return to their communities with structure, accountability, and practical tools for success.
Derek credits his progress to the grace of God, the support of his family, and the people who believed in him during his lowest moments. His story reflects a deeply held belief that people are more than their worst decisions—and that with accountability, discipline, and opportunity, transformation is possible and a better tomorrow is within reach.
Inspired
I have worked closely with individuals navigating reentry, employment barriers, and the legal system, always centering dignity, responsibility, and long-term stability.
None of this would be possible without the grace of God, the love and patience of my family, and the people who believed in me when I was at my lowest. My hope is that this book serves not only as a guide, but as encouragement—that no matter where someone comes from or what they have faced, change is possible, purpose can be reclaimed, and a Better Tomorrow is within reach.
